These have been the voyages of the Space Shuttle Discovery.

Okay, the Star Trek thing notwithstanding, the end of the Shuttle program is breaking my heart. Yes, I know the things need to be retired, they're old and worn out and we need to focus on expanding our horizons (literally), but damn it, the Shuttle was a huge part of my life. I remember the first Shuttle launch, I remember climbing on the roof of our house to see the tiny, white V of the shuttle passing over us, I remember seeing the Challenger explode on TV in my fourth grade classroom... Space was a huge, huge thing in my house, partly because my mother was a Trekkie but mostly because I was raised as a nerd, by nerds, who loved the idea of a vast universe where anything is possible.

I can only hope the next phase of our space exploration is as awesome as the Shuttle was.

Thrusters on full.

:( I love astronomy dearly but it just will not be the same without the shuttle program. I know there's a push among my generation of graduates for private space flight, but I worry it's not going to really happen in our lifetime.
